Souvenir
Baumgasse 77, 1030 Vienna
As part of the Klima Biennale Wien and in collaboration with Calle Libre – an association dedicated to art and culture in public space – NEVERCREW has created a new work at Baumgasse 77. This piece situates their recurring themes within both a local and global context. Calle Libre views urban art as a tool for social engagement, creating platforms where international artistic perspectives intersect with pressing ecological questions. In this framework, NEVERCREW’s intervention becomes part of a broader curatorial approach that understands public space as a site of responsibility, dialogue, and collective reflection.

“Souvenir”
The mural, titled “Souvenir,” is part of the exhibition (NO) Funny Games at the Klima Biennale. It presents a “before-and-after” scenario through contrasting pairs of elements—large and small, living and lifeless—coexisting within the same pictorial space. These oppositions are not separate realities, but rather interconnected conditions that exist simultaneously, challenging viewers to confront the complexity of the world we inhabit.
NEVERCREW is a Swiss artist duo composed of Christian Rebecchi and Pablo Togni. Working collaboratively since 1996, the two have developed a distinctive artistic practice that deeply explores the relationship between humans, nature, and societal systems. Internationally recognized for their large-scale murals in public spaces, NEVERCREW uses the street as a direct platform for communication—making ecological, social, and political issues visible to a broad audience.
At the core of their work are endangered animal species, which function as symbolic representatives of fragile ecological systems. Bears and whales frequently appear in their imagery, often enclosed within transparent, technical, or glass-like structures. This ambivalent visual language reflects both the human desire to protect and control nature, and the problematic consequences of isolation, instrumentalization, and the loss of natural habitats. Through this, NEVERCREW emphasizes that species conservation cannot be separated from the broader context of climate change. Protecting individual species becomes a global systemic issue—especially as human intervention itself is a key driver of biodiversity loss.
Their works are far from purely illustrative. Instead, they operate as complex visual systems in which biological and mechanical elements coexist in a delicate balance. Viewers are encouraged to engage with both the intricate details and the larger whole, prompting reflection on their own position within these interconnected systems.
