In equality - flags of freedom
In April and May 2026, Okuda San Miguel and his team completed a 1,100-square-meter mural—now the largest in Austria. True to his signature style, the work emerges as a vibrant statement on equality, addressing social and gender disparities through bold color and geometric form.
Officially unveiled on May 7, the mural also marks the starting point for the continued development of the Muthgasse district—signaling a new chapter for the neighborhood.
Curated by Jakob Kattner and produced by the Calle Libre team, the project was realized with the generous support of the City of Vienna and BUWOG. It was further made possible through strong partnerships with Murexin, the Embassy of Spain in Austria and our friends from Wild im West.
About: Okuda san miguel
Born in Santander, Spain, Okuda San Miguel (1980) lives and works in Madrid, where he operates from his studio in the Spanish capital. His distinctive iconographic language marked by geometric structures, multicolored patterns, and universal narratives has positioned him as one of the most recognized and admired contemporary artists worldwide.
Okuda’s distinctive visual language combines geometric harmonies and intense colours, creating artworks that feel as if they belong to a parallel universe. His signature style blends rainbow-coloured architecture with organic forms, anonymous bodies, headless animals and symbolic elements. Rooted in street art and often described as Pop Surrealism, his work explores themes such as existentialism, the universe, freedom and the tension between modern life and human origins.
A pivotal moment in his career came in 2015 with the transformation of a deconsecrated church into the iconic Kaos Temple, a project that propelled him onto the international stage and led to collaborations with cultural institutions and global brands. Since beginning his studio practice in 2009, Okuda has continued to expand his artistic universe through murals, sculptures, exhibitions and large-scale public interventions around the world.
His work includes projects such as sculptures for the Boston Seaport, participation in the Titanes social inclusion initiative, and his monumental mural The Evolution of Language in Saginaw, Michigan. Alongside public art, Okuda creates studio works using techniques like embroidery, collage and mixed media, while also exploring sculpture, photography, video and digital formats.
Through colour, geometry and symbolism, Okuda’s work invites reflection and dialogue, bridging street culture, contemporary art and universal human themes.
