fischfossil: Sparnodus macrophthalmus

Sparnodus Macrophthalmus by Raffael Strasser tells the very old underwater story of Austria. The depiction of a fossil of the marine creature takes us back to the times, before the continental drift, when this part of the continental Europe was underwater as evidenced by various fossils found in the mountains, for example.

In this design, Raffael incorporated the homeowners’ wish for “sea creatures,” however in his urban interventions, he makes a point of not losing sight of the local context. Since there is no sea or other body of water anywhere near Schlossgasse, he decided to look to the past for inspiration. The fossil state of the fish also slightly hints at rock formations as well as nature and exploration overall, and so is connected to the climbing facilities located in the building on which the mural is painted.
