SilOsOphie: The bird tOweR
The Bird Tower in Raasdorf is a project carried out as part of the WEIN/4 Festival 2026 that impressively combines art and nature conservation. An existing silo tower belonging to the Hasitschka company, visible from afar, was transformed into a living work of art. Artist Mariella Lehner has adorned the facade of the grain silo with two striking motifs: a barn owl and a falcon. However, this mural is more than just decoration, as special nesting boxes for precisely these endangered bird species have been installed inside the tower. Thus, the structure serves as an artistic new home for these graceful creatures while also making them more visible to people.
The project was conceived by renowned ornithologist Leander Khil and was developed in collaboration between the Silosophie association, Hasitschka Agrarhandel GmbH, and Calle Libre. The unveiling of the bird-themed artwork took place on July 27, 2026, accompanied by speeches, live music, and an animated light show with projections onto the tower. The Bird Tower was realized in close collaboration with the participatory art project “SOLANGE” by artist and activist Katharina Cibulka, who had installed a net on the silo tower bearing a slogan visible from afar in the Lower Austrian dialect, paying tribute to all female farmers:
“As long as a female farmer works hard but reaps little recognition, I am a feminist.”
