Klima Biennale Wien 2026: Worlds Beyond Words

From April 9 to May 10, 2026, Vienna will once again be shaped by Klima Biennale Wien. The second edition of this cross-disciplinary festival presents a diverse program at the intersection of art, climate, and society under a shared guiding theme: Unspeakable Worlds, pointing to the complexity of present-day realities that cannot be fully grasped through language.

A special focus is placed on public space, with a concentration of festival activities at Karlsplatz. For one month, artistic positions, activations, and events will take place there. In addition to the festival headquarters at KunstHausWien, more than 50 partner institutions will contribute program highlights throughout the city. Klima Biennale Wien was initiated by the City of Vienna and is organized by KunstHausWien, a museum of Wien Holding.

(No) Funny Games – Exhibition in Public Space

During the Biennale, urban space becomes a projection surface for the unspeakable behind beautiful façades. Under the title “(No) Funny Games – Or How We Learned to Care and Love the Dystopia”, artists develop site-specific works oscillating between idyll and dystopia. They bring the climate question to the places where urban life unfolds.

The program is concentrated at Karlsplatz, where four artistic positions will be on view. Among others, Margot Pilz revives Kaorle am Karlsplatz from 1982, bringing the Italian seaside resort back to Vienna for Klima Biennale Wien forty years later in renewed form. Activations will take place through partner institutions from the surrounding area, such as TU Wien and the Vienna State Opera.

Of the ten artistic positions in total—located on house façades, bridges, billboards, and in a shopping center—eight were newly commissioned for the Biennale. Featuring works by River Claure, Eva Seiler, NEVERCREW, Dominik Eulberg / Marcin Nowicki, Pia Sirén, Zheng Mahler, Future Leaks, Folke Köbberling, and Romuald Hazoumè. Several projects are co-curated with KÖR – Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien, MuseumsQuartier Wien, museum in progress, and Calle Libre.

About NEVERCREW

Since 1996 their artistic path developed mainly in the urban art context with the realization of mural paintings, installations and sculptures. Their work takes shape worldwide and rotates around the concept of comparison connected to the relationship between humankind and nature and between humankind and “systems”, with a focus on environmental and social topics.
