2022: Regeneration

A poster for Calle Libre street art festival 2022 titled Regeneration. The poster designed by a street artist Boaz Untay. 9th edition of our annual festival for urban aesthetics

01. - 07.08.2022

“Regeneration” draws on the importance of going beyond sustainability, into the regeneration of people, communities and entire ecosystems.

We wanted to understand how art can have the power to highlight both the fragility and beauty of nature, our communities and the individuals that co-create those communities.

Street art specifically, has always had a set thought process: from questioning, to criticizing, and highlighting grievances on a wide variety of socially relevant issues. Through artistic interpretation, we want to draw attention to the fact that environmental protection and ecosystem restoration should start being of relevance to all of us. It is not enough to be sustainable, now we must look at regeneration.

Calle Libre 2022 edition regeneration at Nordwestbahnhof

On the site of Vienna's freight station Nordwestbahnhof, a new district will be created from 2024 - instead of polluting the environment with freight traffic, a hub for living and working, as well as culture, education, but also recreation and open space will be created here. As Calle Libre, we wanted to use this disused area before construction begins to express our vision, but above all the vision of international artists of a green, ecologically and socially sustainable future.

workshops & kids program

During our workshop series "City of tomorrow - how will the city and its appearance change?" Calle Libre wanted to use the fallow area of the Nordwestbahnhof to express its visions, but above all the visions of the workshop artists and the participants of a green, ecologically and socially sustainable future.

As part of Summer in the City the Viennese Chamber of Labour hosted YOUNG ACTION workshops for kids at the Calle Libre Festival:

Open circus workshop for kids and teens – with Circus KAOS

Juggling, climbing, building human pyramids, simple acrobatics, and balancing Circus KAOS offered a workshop where children and teenagers met to experiment and make circus the way they wanted. Participants had plenty of circus materials on site, giving them the opportunity to try and learn. We played, learned, and did circus together!

Drunter und Drüber – marble run workshop for children – with ZOOM mobil

With cardboard tubes, hoses and tape, the children built an adventurous marble landscape. They invented a wild roller coaster, a mysterious labyrinth, a half pipe or a marble carousel. Which marble rolls the fastest? Can marbles roll upwards? And who actually lives in our marble world?

Beatboxing for Kids and Teens – with Geo Popoff

Beatboxing is fascinating and good for the body. Everyone can learn the basics quickly and experience themselves directly as musicians. And all that purely with sounds produced by the human sound system! How does Geo make drums, funky trumpets, scratching sounds, deep basslines or even a beat and the voice at the same time? Techniques were explained in a playful way and individual talents were also taken into account.

urban art Guided TOur

In 2022 we offered two types of tours : one at the festival side at the Nordwestbahnhof, where visitors were able to watch artists during their creating phase and one through Vienna's street art stronghold, the 6th and 7th district where visitors to the tour had the opportunity to immerse themselves in an alternative Vienna and, away from Schnitzel, Prater and Spanish Riding School, to get to know aspects of the capital that cannot be found in any normal travel guide.

artist talk

In line with the theme of the festival, Calle Libre will host a panel discussion with the artists Gamze Yalcin, Julia Benz, and Mots in this year’s Festival Lounge. The topics of regeneration, integrative urban development, and sustainability were critically reflected on and treated theoretically. Visitors were able to interact directly with the artists, ask questions, and deal with various topics together.
